Dr. Jeffrey J. Geihs
(702) 799-2270, ext. 4100
Dr. Jeff Geihs began his career in public education in 1995 as an English teacher in the International Baccalaureate Program and English Department Chair within the Clark County School District (CCSD) at Valley High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1999, he successfully completed CCSD's Leadership program and was appointed dean of students at Mike O'Callaghan Middle School and Chaparral High School, respectively. In 2001, he was appointed assistant principal at Cheyenne High School and served in multiple leadership capacities. Most notably, he assisted in the establishment of single-sex instruction and helped create rigorous standards that ultimately led to accelerated programs at Cheyenne High School.
In 2004, Jeff accepted a position as a Chief of Staff to a Region Superintendent within CCSD. During his short tenure in this position, he helped spearhead "Standard Student Attire" within the district, which subsequently led to CCSD Board Policy. This policy was upheld in Nevada District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court, and is currently on appeal to the United States Supreme Court.
In 2005, Jeff was appointed Cheyenne High School principal, a diverse suburban school serving approximately 2,500 students. During his tenure as principal, he expanded single-sex instruction, eliminated remedial classes, expanded honors and Advanced Placement courses by 170%, and added a number of additional performing arts elective classes, which appealed to the student population. Most notably, he ensured the successful implementation of the only K-12 Mandarin Chinese language program in Nevada, implemented the Academic Decathlon, which made Nevada the 43rd state in the Union to offer this program/course, and implemented a required reading program for students below grade reading level, the only mandatory program of its sort within CCSD.
Under Jeff's Leadership, Cheyenne High School achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), as specified by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Empowerment School status in 2008. Cheyenne High School was the first large comprehensive high school in Nevada to operate using the Empowerment Model, which is a based on the Edmonton Canada model (a results-driven corporate business approach).
In July 2009, Jeff joined The Public Education Foundation as the Vice President and Chief Operations Officer where he oversaw the annual fundraising in excess of 7 million dollars while creating numerous public/private partnerships. Additionally, he spearheaded the expansion of The Foundation's Teacher EXCHANGEâ„¢, assisted in the composition and application for a 5 million dollar i3 grant for the expansion of The Foundation's Worldwide Learning Connection, and initiated the concept for a Foundation Innovation's Academy for CCSD principals to be partnered with business entrepreneurs so that they can learn the tenants of success.
In July, 2010, Jeff was appointed principal at Liberty High School (LHS). His immediate charge there is to begin Nevada's only "12-13" model with the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) so that LHS students can begin their college instruction in high school and continue their freshman college on the LHS campus.
Jeff has served as the President of the Clark County Association of Secondary School Principals (CCASP) and the Secondary School Principals' Association of Nevada (SSPAN). He currently serves as the President-Elect of the Clark County Association of School Administrators Profesional-technical Employees (CCASAPE) and as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). He was elected to these positions by his peers. As such, he meets with Nevada State lawmakers and Nevada's congressional representatives in Washington D.C. on behalf of his members' interests. Jeff currently serves as an Advisory Board Member to The Public Education Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors for the Business Alliance for the Children of Nevada (BEACON).
Jeff received a B.A. in broadcast communications from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1991, a B.A. in secondary education with an emphasis on English literature in 1994, a M.S. in educational administration from Nova Southeastern University, in 1996, and an Ed.D. in educational administration from Nova Southeastern University in 2004.
Currently, Jeff serves as an adjunct professor at Northcentral and Touro Universities for their graduate level teacher programs and as a dissertation committee chair. Additionally, he has served as adjunct professor for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Nova Southeastern and Kaplan Universities.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Mindy, his children, Madison and David, and playing an occasional round of golf.
