Data Shows Standard Student Attire Promotes Safety, Enhances Climate, and Increases Student Achievement

In 2003, Liberty High School opened as a Standard Student Attire (SSA) school. This has contributed to a safe and positive school environment and stellar student achievement results. Under Clark County School District Regulation 5131, every school that chooses to implement SSA must conduct a vote every four years. Patriot families will receive a ballot in April, 2012 regarding renewing SSA at Liberty.

Dr. Geihs and the 2012 SSA Committee (consisting of the principal, teachers, students, and parents) are again asking for your support by voting for SSA, because they have recognized the benefits for our students. Please vote in favor of SSA and return your ballot.

During the 2004/2005 school year a study was done in nine CCSD schools that were implementing SSA. These nine schools did not have SSA the previous year. The study compared these schools from September 2003, when students were not in SSA, to September 2004, when they were. There is evidence linking SSA to improved school-wide discipline, which has a direct impact on student achievement and a direct impact on school climate. The study found that there was a measurable decrease in the number of disciplinary issues.

The study revealed:

  • There was an 18% decrease in suspensions.
  • A 40% decrease in the number of students placed on a Required Parent Conference (RPC).
  • A 46% decrease in classroom disruptions.
  • A 33% decrease in campus disruptions.
  • A 31% decrease in the number of fights.
A 22% decrease in the number of expulsion referrals.
  • The overall decrease in behavior issues from the available 2004/2005 data is 37%.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please plan on attending the SSA parent meeting on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the theater.
