from Dr. Geihs
Liberty High School Principal
Hello. My name is Jeff Geihs and I am the principal here at Liberty. Thank you for visiting our website. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about what Liberty offers, which may be of interest to you and of educational benefit to your child.
At Liberty High School we emphasize Classical Studies. The reason we do so is because we feel that it gives your child a strong foundation for their future studies and academic success. At the root of studying the classics is the teaching of Latin. Although thought to be a "dead language" it is the root of most languages spoken in western civilization. Studying Latin provides the most fundamental knowledge of the roots of the English language and is a cornerstone in the study of law and medicine, among many of the professions. That along with the studying of the history of civilizations, especially the Greeks and Romans, gives our students a competitive edge in applying to America's best colleges and universities.
We also know that the average Standardized Academic Test (SAT) score for students who study Latin is 666 while it is 504 for those who do not. This is important because SAT scores are a critical factor in college admittance.
50% of Liberty students are enrolled in one or more honors or Advanced Placement (AP) courses. We push our students toward academic success at Liberty. We believe this is essential because, according to the American College Board, students who take one AP class are 45% more likely to enroll and graduate from a four year college and students that take two AP classes are 66% more likely to do so. The residual effect of this is evident for our graduates since approximately 80% of Liberty High School seniors go on to college, compared to the national average of 33% of high school graduates going to college. Our primary concern at Liberty is our students' academic success!
This year we have added a new language course offering that will help to further prepare our students for a global economy: Mandarin Chinese! Why? Because China is the world's fastest growing economy. As a matter of fact, at China's current rate of economic growth, their economy will surpass that of the United States and Western Europe combined by the year 2020. Therefore, an American student that has some knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, China's number one dialect, will have a competitive edge in American business interactions.
But, I have more exciting news. This year again, Liberty students will be able to enroll in College of Southern Nevada courses at Liberty. We are calling this the "Liberty High School 12-13 Program." A student enrolled in this program would have the option of continuing these CSN courses after graduation from Liberty. While there will be CSN Tuition costs for students who want to enroll in these courses, this program has the potential of saving parents thousands of tuition dollars since a student could potentially leave Liberty and enter college as a sophomore or even a junior! This is a program that will only be available to Liberty High School students.
We have great plans for the program offerings at Liberty while we continue the many award winning athletic programs and activities as well. We are going to make Liberty one of America's flagship high schools.
Again, I thank you for visiting our website. I invite you to call or email me directly if you have questions at 799-2270 ext. 4100, or via e-mail at jgeihs@interact.ccsd.net.
Best Regards,
Jeff Geihs
